Crops

Canola, Wheat, Oats, Peas

Allen Choy & Sons first began farming in 1974 with the purchase of it’s first farm, a half section in Strathclair. Since those early years, the Choy’s expanded their crop land to 10+ sections in the communities of Strathclair, Shoal Lake, Hamiota and Elphinstone  growing wheat, barley, flax, oats, peas and canola. More recently, with Newdale clay loam soil, canola and wheat have been the main production crops.

Cattle

From 7 Simmentals to Hereford, Red and Black Angus

In 1977, the Choy’s began raising cattle, purchasing their first 7 Simmentals from the hockey player Bobby Hull. Over the years, the cow herd expanded to a peak of 650 head cow/calf operaton with 300 head feedlot production. As meat preferences changed, the Simmental line, including purebreds under the “North Salt Lake Farms” brand, evolved into a Red and Black Angus operation. The remaining Simmental line is now mainly cross-bred with the Hereford line.
